If you are living and\/or working in the Netherlands, you\u2019ll probably receive an invitation to do your \u2018Aangifte Inkomstenbelasting<\/a>\u2019 for 2023. It\u2019s a tax return form where you state how much money you earned and paid in taxes last year. Sometimes you have to pay a bit extra, but often you get some money back!<\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s mandatory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Aangifte inkomstenbelasting is mandatory for Dutch taxpayers who receive a tax return letter or tax return form C. Non-resident taxpayers<\/a> may also get a tax return letter. Even if you didn\u2019t get a letter, you may still have to report income. For 2023, fill out a tax return form if you need to pay \u20ac52 or more in additional tax, or if you are owed \u20ac17 or more.<\/p>\n\n

There\u2019s a deadline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

If you got a tax return letter, be sure to fill it out before July 14th of this year<\/strong>! If you\u2019re late, you might get a fine. The same deadline applies if you didn\u2019t get a letter but still have to report your income. Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax office) has up to 3 years to process your tax return, but the sooner you do it, the sooner you\u2019ll hear back. If you file your tax return before April 1st, you usually get a response before July 1st.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

You can do it online<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

You can fill out your tax return statement online using Mijn Belastingdienst<\/a>. Unfortunately, this portal is only available in Dutch. We recommend using a translator like DeepL<\/a> or Google Translate<\/a> to help you.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Start by gathering all the necessary information, such as your DigiD, account number, and annual statement. Then log in to Mijn Belastingdienst<\/a> and click on \u2018Inkomstenbelasting\u2019 (Income tax), then \u2018Belastingjaar 2023\u2019 (Tax year 2023). You’ll see that a lot of info is filled out automatically by the Dutch tax office. Check all the details against your own documents and make corrections where needed. If you are unsure, use the information from your own documents. Once everything is filled out, sign the form digitally sign and click \u2018Verzenden\u2019 (Submit). If everything was successful, you\u2019ll see a page with \u2018Ontvangstbevestiging\u2019 (Confirmation of Receipt).<\/p>\n\n

If you still have questions about your tax return, visit the Belastingdienst website<\/a>. There you\u2019ll find answers to many common questions.<\/p>\n\n
